Why is what we do important?

People with learning disabilities have been marginalised and misunderstood. Society often prejudices and discriminates against them because they find it difficult to cope with the way that they present or communicate. This is largely due to ignorance. Whilst there is now more knowledge and acceptance of people who are different, there is always more that we can do to promote the rights of people with learning disabilities.

We need to work in our local communities to ensure that individuals can be integrated and accepted, and attitudes changed for the better. It is important to encourage people to come into our settings and to form friendships and relationships with the people we support. We need to be beacons, shining a light on what we do and radiating out into our local communities.

It is really important to be able to provide flexible services and be able to respond quickly to individual changes in need. Most organisations have more rigid systems and structures in place and so are unable to do this. Decisions can be made in the individual settings by managers. If larger expenditure is required, this can be quickly referred to top management, enabling services to be effective in meeting individual needs.

What makes us unique?

People say that they can feel the love and the passion when they come into the organisation. This is not something that can be defined on paper, but is reflective of the genuine commitment to individuals and in ensuring that they know their value as individuals and that they are respected for who they are.

We have always gone over and above what is expected of us. The organisation is known as Baronsmede ‘Family’ Homes for a reason. Everyone connected to us is part of a larger family and is supported in equal measure, as in any other family network. There is a sense of belonging which is important, and this provides essential support networks when people are going through difficulties.
